What is the primary reason that the older population is growing rapidly?
Chiefly because of growing life expectancy

Yes. Life ex. In 1900 was 47 years. 2012 it is 78. It is expected to be in the mid 80s bu 2050
What is ‘Maximum life span’?
The maximum number of years a species can survive when environmental hazards are removed.
humans have a soft limit of 85-90 years but can not expect to live beyond 120 years.

The number of employed people compared with dependent people.
ie. in 1910 there were 10 working people supporting 1 retired elderly.
now there is less than 5:1

Why should we study aging?
-increase understanding of social issues
-insight into our own aging
insight into the aging experience of others ( loved ones etc)
-develop an understanding of your strengths and interests in regards to aging
