Ch. 1 Flashcards
pg.2-3
In what way does physiology depend on anatomy?
physiology depends on anatomy because the function of the body can be described, but without actually seeing it, you don’t fully understand the function of something. They directly relate to one another
Would you be studying anatomy or physiology if you investigated how muscles shorten?
if you explored the location for the lungs in the body?
muscles shorten- physiology
lungs location-anatomy
study of the structure of body parts and their relationships to one another
anatomy
the functions of a body
physiology
large body structures
Gross anatomy
studies by systems for anatomical structures
systemic anatomy
study of internal structures as they relate to the overlying skin surface
surface anatomy
the study of small structures not seen by the naked
microscopic anatomy
study of the cells of the body
cytology
the study of tissues
histology
traces structural changes that occur in the body through a life span
developmental anatomy
concerns developmental changes that occur before birth
embryology
kidney function and production of urine
reneal physiology
nervous system
neurophysiology
examines the operation of the hear and blood vessels
cardiovascular physiology
what a structure can do depends on its simple form
principle of complimentarity of structure and function
what level of structure organizations is typical of cytologists field of study?
cellular level
what is the correct structural order for the following term: organism, tissue, organ, cell
cell, tissue, organ, organ system
which organ system includes the bones and cartilages?
which includes the nasal cavity, lungs and trachea?
skeletal system
respiratory system
simplest level of the structural hierarchy is the?
chemical level
consists of cells and their functions
cellular level
made up of a group of cells that all have common functions.
ex. epithelium, muscle, connective, and nervouse
Tissue level
carries out complex function
organ level
made out of tissues, carry out multiple functions and may hold things like juices, vessels, and blood
an organ
organs that work together to accomplish a common purpose
organ system level
what kind of organs are found in the cardiovascular system?
blood vessels and the heart
what is the function of the cardiovascular system?
the heart pumps blood
what kind of organs are found in the integumentary system?
hair, skin, nails
what is the function of the integumentary system
external body covering, protects deep tissues
what kind of organs are found in the skeletal system
bones and joints
what is the function of the skeletal system?
protects and supports body organs and provides a framework, the muscles use to cause movement
what kind of organs are found in the muscular system?
ex. skeletal muscles
what is the function of the muscular system?
manipulation of environment, locomotion and facial depression
what kind of organs are found in the nervous system
Brains, spinal cord, and nerves
what is the function of the nervous system ?
fast acting control system of the body responds to internal and external charges
what kind of organs are found in the endocrine system?
pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, thymus, achiral gland, pancreas
what is the function of the endocrine system?
glands secrete hormones that regulate processes like growth, reproduction, and nutrients use
what kind of organs are found in the lymphatic system
thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, red bone marrow, lympatic muscles
what is the function of the lymphatic system?
picks up fluid leaked by the blood vessels and returns it to blood
what kind of organs are found in the respiratory system?
lungs, larynx, bronchus, trahea, nasal cavity,
what is the function of respiratory system?
keep blood constantly supplied with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide
what kind of organs are found in the digestive system?
esophagus, liver, stomach, small instestine, large intestine,
what is the function of digestive system?
breaks down food into absorbable units that enter the blood for distribution to body cells
what kind of organs are found in the urinary system?
kidney, ureters, urinary bladder
what is the function of the urinary system?
eliminates nitrogenous wastes from the body
what kind of organs are found in the reproductive system?
prostate gland, ovary, penis, testis, scrotum, uterus, vagina, uterine tube
What is the function of the reproductive system?
production of offspring
