In 1774, the gaol was visited by John Howard, a well known prison reformer.
How were the prisoners separated during the gaol era?
During the gaol era, the prisoners were not seperated at all. Men and women were mixed with children, murderers were mixed with thieves.
What key event of the gaol’s history happened in 1348?
In 1348, the black death swept Britain. It may have killed around 40% of the population of Norwich.
What key event of the gaol’s history happened in 1381?
In 1381, Norwich was captured during Peasants Revolt, but only held for a short time until the peasants were fought off by the Bishop.
What features can be found within the castle that link to the prisoners that were once held in the gaol?
Around the castle, religious carvings and declarations of innocence can be found carved into walls. This is especially prominent in the chapel.
What about the gaol shows that people at the time didn’t care for the wellbeing of prisoners? (3)

- Conditions within the gaol were poor e.g. overcrowding.
