CFS and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Flashcards
What are the symptoms of CF/ME?
LT physical and cognitive fatigue not alleviated by rest.
Flu like symptoms, muscle/joint pain, sore throat, mood disturbance, tender lymph nodes, post-exertional malaise
What are the suggested aetiologies of CFS/ME?
Mitochondrial dysfunction + OS, sleep dysregulation
Poor detox pathways
SNPs
Virus i.e. EBV, Lyme’s
Immune imbalance - low immune ‘energy’
Abnormal HPAA functioning - hyPOcorticolsim
Serotonin reduction by upregulation of the serotonin transporter
Gut brain axis: high clostridium/ruminococcus, low faecalibacterium. Metabolic endotoxemia, dysbiosis…immune dysregulation.
What would you remove to support recovery from CF/M\e?
Alcohol (nutrient depletor)
Caffeine (strains adrenal glands)
Sugar (destabilises blood sugar and energy)
Artificial sweeteners (neurotoxic, increase brain fog)
What fat is beneficial to cell membranes?
Omega-3
EPA - anti-inflamm and mito growth, size and distrib
DHA - structure of ETC
= reduction in relapse and improvement in cognition
How else would you support CF/ME
Protein for immune cell restoration
Immune support
GI support - biotics, bitters, enzymes
What diet has shown good efficacy with CF/ME?
Ketosis: <50g carbs/day. 1.5g protein/kg
Ketones (from fat and SCFA) provide energy for ATP instead of glucose
75% fat, 25% protein, 5% carbs
What term describes the upregulation of mito capacity and AO defence in response to low mito ROS?
Mitohormesis
i.e. low ROS = healthy cells
How does ketosis support mitohormesis?
Ketosis causes a shift in energy metabolism increasing reliance on mito respiration inducing mitohormesis…. i.e. B-oxidation
Ketones also increase expression of AO energy systems
What two herbs could you support CFS?ME with?
Liquorice - restores adrenal cortex = cortisol = reduced fatigue. Anti-inflammatory
Astraglaus - adaptogenic and immune support
