Equity
Fair treatment of all people and provision of equal opportunities for them in their endeavours
e. g.
- - Trains and train stations: provision of ramps, elevators and space in carriages for wheel chairs
- - Equitable access to good quality health care
Equity:
PROTECTED BY THE GOVERNMENT THROUGH
- Section 23 of the Disability Discrimination Act: makes it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of disability in providing access to or use of premises that the public can enter or use – people in wheelchairs must be able to access public places
- Providing healthcare cards to low income earners
Diversity
Demonstrating tolerance, respect and acceptance of differences. Rather than managing the differences of people and their unique circumstance, diversity should be appreciated and even encouraged
e. g.
- - Accommodating different dietary requirements
- - Businesses and public service employing a diverse range of people
Diversity:

– Public Service Act (1999):
requires government agencies to have a Workplace Diversity Program
– Racial Discrimination Act (1975):
cannot discriminate people on the basis of race, colour, descent or national/ethnic region
Human Rights
Human rights are inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national/ethnic origin, religion, language or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent and indivisible

- - Non-discrimination to all people - age, race, sex and disability

Disability Discrimination Act
1992
- eliminate discrimination against people with disabilities
- promote community acceptance of the principle that people with disabilities has the same fundamental rights as all members of the community
- ensure as far as practicable that people with disabilities have the same rights to equality before the law as other people in the community
Human Rights Framework
Protects the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights
No matter the right at issue, there are basic principles that are always part of human rights standard and implementation

Reaffirm:
– Confirm the validity
– Reaffirm their commitment to promoting awareness and understanding of human rights
Educate:
– Enhance the support of human rights education across the community
Engage:
–Engage with the international community to improve the protection and promotion of human rights
Protect:
– establish a Parlimentary joint committee on Human Rights which will provide greater scrutiny of legislation for compliance with Australia’s human rights obligations
Respect:
– review all legislation, policies and practices for compliance with the seven core UN human right treaties that Australia is apart of
Disability Employment Services
Helps people with disability find work and keep a job
Through the DES, job seekers with disability, injury or health condition can receive assistance to prepare for, find and keep a job
Equal Opportunity Act
1984
an act to promote equality of opportunity in Western Australia and to provide remedies in respect of discrimination on the grounds of sex, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, disability, religion, and age
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
– Begins by recognizing that ‘the inherent of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world
– Declares that human rights are universal
– Includes civil and political rights
– Not a treaty, doesn’t bind countries legally
– Advocates for international peace and security
– Sets out fundamental rights to be protected
