How do physical barriers cause uneven development?
- landlocked countries cut off from seaborne trade
- extreme weather slows development and causes costly repair damage

- rich countries and large international companies want to pay little for materials, coming from LICs
- price of raw materials fluctuates a lot
How do historical events cause uneven development?
- most wealth during colonial period went to European powers
- independence has resulted in political struggles for power and Civil Wars
What does uneven development lead to?
- imbalances between rich and poor
- disparities in wealth
- disparities in health
- international migration
Describe disparities in health.
LICs:
- children under 15 account for 4 in every 10
- complications of childbirth is one of the main causes of death amongst under 5 yr olds
HICs:
- over 70s account for 7 in every 10 deaths
- main causes of death are chronic diseases
What is an immigrant?
person who moves into a country
What is an emigrant?
person who moves out of a country
What is an economic migrant?
person who moves voluntarily to seek a better life
What is a refugee?
person forced to move from their country of origin, such as civil war or natural disaster
What is a displaced person?
person forced to move from their home but stays in their country of origin
