What is Gross National Income?
economic measure of development, expressednas per head of the population
What is the Human Development Index?
social measure expressed in values 0-1, considers: life expectancy, number of years of education, GNI per head
What factors could limit the usefulness of development measures?
data could be out of date, unreliable or hard to collect
data may not take into account subsistence or informal economies
Demographic Transition Model - What is Stage 1?
high birth rate, high death rate, both fluctuate, fairly stable population
Demographic Transition Model - What is Stage 2?
death rate increases, birth rate remains high, population grows
Demographic Transition Model - What is Stage 3?
birth rate drops rapidly, death rate continues to decrease, population grows but not as fast
Demographic Transition Model - What is Stage 4?
low birth rate, low death rate, birth rate can fluctuate depending on economic situation
Demographic Transition Model - What is Stage 5?
birth rate falls below the death rate, death rate increases from aging population, population decreases unless immigration replaces the retired population
Population Pyramids - What do these show?:
- wide base
- no more ‘steps’ at bottom of base
- wide bars at top
- large proportion of young people
- birth rate is falling
- people are living longer
What is the Dependency Ratio?
proportion of people below and above normal working working age
lower the number, the greater the number of people who work
