CEW (Taser) Flashcards
This Deck covers what you need to know for your taser exam.
What are the seven situations where a taser should not be used? (Unless in exceptional circumstances exist)
(CHEF POD)
(CHEF POD)
C - CHILDREN or people with particularly small body mass.
H - Someone who is HANDCUFFED.
E - ELDERLY or disabled
F - Someone FLEEING
P - Female who you suspect on reasonable grounds to be PREGNANT.
O - Occupants of vehicle or operator of machinery where there is danger.
D - Drive stun for pain compliance.
What is the preferred or primary target area for the CEW?
- Aim for the centre of seen target mass of the back. (where possible avoid the head)
What is the secondary target area for the CEW?
- Aim for the lower torso front (Where possible avoid targeting the face, groin or chest areas)
What are the three modes of use for CEW deployment?
- Warning Arc
- Probes Discharged
- Drive Stun
What does the CEW cause in the body?
(NMI)
Neuro-Muscular incapacitation
Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW) should not be used…
SPINE
(SPINE)
S - Where SECONDARY injury is a possibility
P - As a PROD or for coercion
I - INVESTIGATIVE purposes
N - Against passive NON-COMPLIANT, non-threatening subjects
E - Where EXPLOSIVE materials or flammable liquids or gasses present due to possible ignition
CEW spark test
SEAD
(SEAD)
S - Safe direction
E - Ensure cartridge is removed
A - Arm the taser
D - Depress trigger
List CEW hazardous practice…
FARC
(FARC)
F - Failing to properly store and secure the taser resulting in an accidental discharge
A - Accidental discharge of the Taser
R - Recklessly pointing or aiming the taser at another
C - Covering the lens of the Taser Cam or any action or inaction deemed a Hazardous Practice by a Taser Review Panel
What is the criteria to draw and cover with a CEW?
DIA
(DIA)
D - Don’t draw, point or aim your taser unless you are likely to be justified in using it.
I - Immediately arm by moving the safety switch to fire if drawing the Taser in order to cover a subject.
A - Assess the environment and situation unfolding and where the justification for drawing the taser ceases to exist, the taser should be deactivated and re-holstered.
What is the maximum range of the CEW?
Max range: 7.6m
What is the optimum range for NMI?
Optimum range for NMI: 2.1 - 4.5m
What is the definition of the CEW?
CEWs are designed to use propelled wires or direct contact, to conduct an electrical charge to primarily affect motor functions and/ or the sensory nervous system, causing neurological-muscular incapacitation.
What is the probe spread when fired at 7.6 meters?
33cm
What are three safety considerations?
TKE
(TKE)
T - Treat all tasers as if they are armed and ready to discharge
K - Keeps hands away from the front of the taser, particularly when loading and unloading
E - Ensure the safety switch is engaged and the taser is in safe mode.
With safety in mind what should officers do with the CEW?
WNNN
(WNNN)
W - Where practicable, load and unload taser cartridges in a designated taser loading/unloading room
N - Never aim the taser at the eyes or face of another person
N - Never throw a taser to someone else or attempt to catch a taser
N - Never point a taser at anyone unless you intend to use it
