Vertebral Artery Test

A
  • tests for compression of the vertebral artery
  • ask client to rotate the head and then extend
  • hold position for 30 sec. and repeat on other side
  • positive: dizziness, nystagmus, and nausea

Spurlings Test

A
  • tests for nerve root compression
  • NEER: Neutral, Extension, Extension & Rotation
  • dont go onto next postion if the previous position had pain
  • positive: radiating pain on same side arm

NOTE:

  • if pain on opposite side, will indicate muscle spasm
  • if local pain (no radiation), indicates possible facet joint irritation

Scalene Cramp Test

A
  • assess TrP in scalenes or assess TOS
  • client rotates head to affected side and pulls chin down so that its resting above the clavicle

-positive: pain indicating TrP in scalenes or radicular signs indicating TOS

Swallowing Test

A
  • if theres pain while swallowing, assesses whether pain is due to TrP in SCM
  • pincer grasp SCM, when tender spot is found apply gentle pressure and ask client to swallow
  • positive: pain diminishes while swallowing indicating TrP in SCM, if pain is present while swallowing indicates throat infection, hematoma, or space occupying lesion of the cervical spine or tumor
