Cervical Spine: General Articulation and Movement Flashcards
What is a motion segment when talking about the spine?
It is the articulation between two adjacent vertebrae.
When defining movement of the spine what are the 2 acceptable ways ?
1) reference the 2 involved vertebrae
2) the superior segment
When referencing rotation of the spine what structure of the vertebrae is the reference point?
the reference point is the anterior vertebral body. ie If a vertebrae is rotated to the right then the vertebral body is turned right and the SP of the vertebrae is turned left.
If the vertebral body of the vertebrae is rotated left and the sp rotated right in what direction is the vertebrae rotated in?
left
if the SP of a vertebra is rotated right which way is the vertebrae rotated?
left
If the SP of a vertebra is rotated left which way is the vertebrae rotated?
right
At C0-C1 what action occurs?
Flexion/ extension of the head on the neck
At C1-C2 what action occurs?
Rotation
What percentage of rotation happens at the C1-C2 joint?
50%
Most the flexion and extension capabilities of the neck occurs at which joint in the C-spine?
C5-C6
Arthrokinematically rotation and lateral flexion of the neck are the same with rotation to the right or with lateral flexion to the right in what direction do the right and left facets shift?
Rot to the right
right side= facets will slide posterior and inferior (closed position)
left side = facets will slide superior and anterior (open position)
How are the facet joints in the neck oriented?
45 degree orientation posterior to anterior
The superior articular facets facet in what two directions to meet the inferior facets that face in the two opposite directions?
superior = superior posterior
inferior = inferior anterior
The c-spine joints are very much like the SI joints how?
When one side of the neck becomes stuck the other side becomes hyper-mobile
