Q

what is breach position?!

A

Right before birth, most babies are in a headfirst position in the mother’s uterus . Sometimes, the baby is in a bottom-first (or feet-first) position. This is called a breech birth or breech baby

Q

erythroblastosis fetalis

A

Erythroblastosis fetalis is hemolytic anemia in the fetus (or neonate, as erythroblastosis neonatorum) caused by transplacental transmission of maternal antibodies to fetal red blood cells. The disorder usually results from incompatibility between maternal and fetal blood groups, often Rho(D) antigens.

Q

What happens when mother is Rh positive and baby is Rh-negative?

A

If the mother is Rh-negative, her immune system treats Rh-positive fetal cells as if they were a foreign substance. The mother’s body makes antibodies against the fetal blood cells. These antibodies may cross back through the placenta into the developing baby. They destroy the baby’s circulating red blood cells.

Q

what is birth asphyxia

A

Asphyxia (as-FIX-ee-uh) means lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain. Birth asphyxia happens when a baby’s brain and other organs do not get enough oxygen and nutrients before, during or right after birth. This can happen without anyone knowing. Without oxygen and nutrients, cells cannot work properly.

Q

What is the cause of asphyxia?

A

Asphyxia can be caused by injury to or obstruction of breathing passageways, as in strangulation or the aspiration of food (choking) or large quantities of fluid (near-drowning or drowning).

Q

what is meconium ?

A

Meconium is a thick, green, tar-like substance that lines your baby’s intestines during pregnancy. Typically this substance is not released in your baby’s bowel movements until after birth. However, sometimes a baby will have a bowel movement prior to birth, excreting the meconium into the amniotic fluid.

Q

what is periventricular leuko malacia?

A

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is a type of brain injury that affects premature infants. The condition involves the death of small areas of brain tissue around fluid-filled areas called ventricles. The damage creates “holes” in the brain. “Leuko” refers to the brain’s white matter.
