Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
This deck tests your knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the cerebral cortex.
1
Q
Draw out the five lobes of the brain.
A
- Frontal
- Parietal
- Occipital
- Temporal
- Limbic
2
Q
Draw out where the important cortical areas on the brain are.
A
- Frontal - Primary Motor, FEF, PFC, Broca’s
- Parietal - Primary Sensory
- Occipital - Primary Visual
- Temporal - Auditory, Wernicke’s
3
Q
What is the significance of the central sulcus?
A
- Separates primary motor and primary sensory cortexes
- A deep central sulcus on one side often leads to contralateral hand dominance
4
Q
What does the frontal eye field do?
A
- Allows both eyes to look in the same direction
5
Q
What does the prefrontal cortex do?
A
- Higher cognition, social behaviours
6
Q
What does Broca’s motor speech area do?
A
- Controls motor movements necessary for speech
- Lesion leads to expressive aphasia
7
Q
What does the primary visual cortex do?
A
- Processes visual info
8
Q
What do the primary sensory and motor cortexes do?
A
- Processes sensory info
- Controls motor movements
9
Q
What does auditory cortex do?
A
- Processes auditory info
10
Q
What does Wernicke’s sensory speech area do?
A
- Allows speech to be understood
- Mainly found on left hemisphere
- Lesions lead to receptive aphasia
