Cerebral Asymmetry Flashcards
What joins the 2 hemispheres of the brain together?
The corpus callosum
What does laterality mean?
Dominance in one side of the brain in controlling particular activities or functions.
What does the left hemisphere dominate in?
Producing and understanding LANGUAGE.
What does the right hemisphere dominate in?

What is meant by the phrase ‘laterality is a relative concept’?
That each hemisphere is not solely responsible for different functions - both hemispheres play a role in virtually every behaviour that you partake - each part of the brain just specializes.
What is laterality affected by?
Environmental and genetic factors
What environmental and genetic factors affect laterality?
- left handedness
- females
- the cerebral organisation of these people is more integrated and less lateralised.
