Cerebral arterial supply Flashcards
Describe area supplied by ACA and corresponding neurological deficits.
Supply: Frontal and medial areas of cortex, particularly frontal and parietal lobes, and anterior limb of the internal capsule.
Deficit: Weakness and paraesthesia of face and arms contralateral.
Describe area supplied by MCA and corresponding neurological deficits.
Supply: lateral areas of cortex, and parietotemporal areas.
Deficit: Contralateral weakness/hemiplegia and hemiparaesthesia of face and arm. Dysphagia if dominant hemisphere. Contralateral homonymous hemianopia. Parietal neglect if non-dominant hemisphere.
Describe area supplied by PCA and corresponding neurological deficits.
Supply: Occipital lobe.
Deficit: Contralateral homonymous hemianopia
Describe area supplied by vertebrobasilar circulation and corresponding neurological deficits.
Supply: Cerebellum, brainstem and occipital lobes
Deficit: Hemianopia, cortical blindness, diplopia, nystagmus, ataxia, vertigo, dysarthria and dysphasia, coma
Describe area supplied by lenticulostriate arteries and corresponding neurological deficits.
Supply: Basal ganglia, lentiform nucleus, putamen, thalamus, internal capsule
Deficit: Pure motor loss, pure sensory loss, ataxic hemiparesis (incoordination and weakness)
Describe area supplied by PICA and corresponding neurological deficits.
Supply: Lateral medulla
Deficit: Lateral medullary syndrome; vertigo, dysphagia, vomiting, nystagmus, ataxia, soft palate paralysis, Horner’s syndrome, crossed sensory loss
