Q

What is the function of the putamen?

A

Putamen is connected to head region of caudate nucleus. It is involved in voluntary and involuntary motor control.

Q

What is the function of globus pallidus?

A

Internal segments of globus pallidus sends output to thalamus via GABA (inhibitory motor function).

External segments of globus pallidus relay information between other basal ganglia nuclei and internal segments of the pallidus.

Q

What is substantia nigra and its function?

A

Substantia nigra consists of pars reticulata and pars compacta.

Pars reticulata segment (involved in inhibitory pathways) regulates eye movements.

Pars compacta relays information between input and output sources, in motor control and coordination.

They also help regulate mood, learning and control voluntary movement and affect brain’s reward circuit.
