Cerebellum Flashcards
Functions
mid-course corrections of movement
Pathologies
incoordination (dysarthria, dysmetria, dysdiaochokinesis), movement tremor
From where does the cerebellum receive input from?
muscles and motor cortex/brain stem
Where does cerebellum send its output?
to the motor cortex/brain stem
Describe how the cerebellum interprets things
Motor commands are compared with proprioceptive (muscle) feedback
What are the two functional regions of the cerebellum?
medial and lateral cerebellum
What structure is in the medial cerebellum?
vermis, deep cerebellar nuclei (fastigial)
Where does the medial cerebellum receive input from?
vestibular nuclei
Output to: vestibular nuclei to control balance
dentate nucleus is found where?
lateral cerebellum
input/output of cerebellum
output: pre motor cortex to control motor planning, initiation and timing of movements
input: contralateral motor cortex
Superior cerebellar peduncle
contains mostly efferents which decussate under the superior colliculi of the midbrain and project to contralateral thalamus
middle cerebellar peduncle
mostly afferent fibers; largest of the peduncles and is the only one visible from the surface of the brain stem
Inferior cerebellar peduncle
mostly afferents, arise from locations including Clarke’s nucleus of T spine
