Cerebellum Flashcards
The cerebellum contains 3 lobes:
1.anterior
2.posterior
3.flocculondular
What are the primary functions of the cerebellum
1.movement coordination
2.maintenance of posture
3.maintenance of tone/balance
4.motor learning
Cerebellum constitutes only 10% of total brain volume but contains over 80% of its neurons
What are the consequences of cerebellar damage
Does not result in complete movement abolition, but does cause severe movement disruption
The cerebellum is connected to the dorsal aspect of the brainstem by 3 symmetrical pairs of penducles:
1.superior penducle
2.middle penducle
3.inferior penducle
The cerebellar cortex is split into 3 functional sub divisions:
1.cerebrocerebellum
2.spinocerebellum
3.vestibulocerebellum
Cerebellar cortex: cerebrocerebellum
1.largest region of the cerebral cortex
2.involved in motor planning
Cerebellar cortex: spinocerebellum
1.regulates body and limb movement
2.inputs: vermis, intermediate cortex
Cerebellar activity: purkinje cells
1.Each purkinje cell has about 200000 synapses.
2.surface area is very large
3.the dendrites receive afferent input from paralell fibres and the climbing fibre
