What is Terre Blanche?
White limestone clay marl with fossils of oysters from the Kimmeridgian era
Tends to produce late-ripening, structured, powerful wines that require age to reveal themselves
Found primarily on the western side of the appellation, near the town of Chavignol
Similar to the soils found in Chablis
What is Caillottes
Stony, gravelly limestone
Produces richer and more aromatic wines intended for early enjoyment
Stones reflect heat and promote early ripening
Concentrated in the middle of the Sancerre region
What is Silex?
Silex, or flint, is said to instill an ageworthy freshness as well as a steely, flinty character in the wines
Within Sancerre, silex is found in the easternmost vineyards.
