Central Nervous System drugs Flashcards
Treatment of nacropelsy
Modafinil
Stimulate respiration
Analeptics: Xanthine
- Given to increase child’s attention span and cognitive performance
- Used to treat narcolepsy
Methylprenidate
Drugs that block receptors ACh
Anticholinergic Agents
Directly/indirectly cause activation of dopamine receptors
Dopaminergic drugs
Inhibits breakdown of dopamine
MAO-B inhibitors
- Selegiline
- Rosagiline
Converted to Dopamine and activates dopamine receptors
DOPAMINE REPLACEMENT
- Levodopa
- Levodopa/Carbidopa
Anti-viral but promotes release of dopamine
Amantadine
Directly activates DA receptors
DOPAMINE AGONISTS
- Pramipexole
- Ropinirole
- Bromocriptine
Inhibits breakdown of levodopa
COMT INHIBITORS
- Entacapone
- Tolcapone
A traditional antiepileptic medication that covers all type of seizures
Valproic Acid (Depakote)
This antiepileptic medication only covers one seizure (Absence)
Ethosuximide (Zarontin)
It is the most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drug. It stabilize nerve cells to keep them from getting overexcited by increasing efflux or decreasing influx of sodium ions.
Phenytoin
It is the cornerstone of epilepsy therapy. It is active against partial seizures and tonic-clonic seizures but not absence seizures. Do not drink grapefruit juice as it can increase levels of this drug.
Carbamazepine
It is effective against partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures but not absence seizures. It is able to suppress seizures without causing generalized CNS depression.
Phenobarbital
