Central Nervous System drugs Flashcards
What is neuropharmacology?
It is the study of drugs that alter processes by the nervous system
Neuropharmacology is divided by two, what are they?
ANS and CNS
It is conducting an action potential down the axon of the neuron
Axonal conduction
Process by which information is carried across the gap between neuron and postsynaptic cell
Synaptic transmission
What are the 3 different types of monoamine?
Dopamine, epinephrine, and serotonin
One of the emergency drugs that we utilized for tachycardia
Adenosine
It limits passages to lipid-soluble agents or via specific transport systems
Blood-brain barrier
What happens when you use CNS drugs for a long period of time?
It increased therapeutic effects
It decreases response occurring in the course of prolonged drug use
Tolerance
State in which abrupt discontinuation of drug use will precipitate a withdrawal syndrome
Physical dependence
Two medications that will work well for narcolepsy and ADHD
Methylprenidate and modafinil
Why do we need to stimulate the CNS?
Because NE and DA will regulate the neurotransmitters and regulate processes inside the Childs brain
Doxapram is the treatment for?
Respiratory depression caused by drug overdose and COPD
One of the intervention of the nurse to a patient with COPD
Give them oxygenation with a maximum 3L
Disease that is slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability and slowed movement
Parkinson’s disease
Is carbidopa and COMT inhibitors useful if there is no levodopa? yes or no?
No
Drug that is anti-viral but promotes release of dopamine
Amantadine
Drug that is working to all types of seizures
Valproic acid
What drug is the most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drug?
Phenytoin
What are the benzodiazepines?
Diazepam, Clonazepam, Clorazepate, and lorazepam
