Central Nervous System Drugs Flashcards
CNS drugs are mostly used for psychiatric disorders like?
suppression of seizures, relief of pain, production of enesthesia
We have a barrier that prevents the chemical that are potentially harmful from going to the brain but this same barrier can be an obstacle for therapeutic agents to reach the brain. What is the barrier called?
Blood Brain Barrier
This type of adaptation to prolonged use of drug requires 2-4 weeks or 1 month of use for the drug to have enough time to modify itself so that patients can experience full therapeutic effects.
Increased Therapeutic Effect
It is one of the special manifestations of CNS adaptation wherein the course of longer consumption of the CNS drug will result to decreased therapeutic response.
Tolerance
It is a state that occurs when a patient abruptly discontinued taking the medicine which lead to withdrawal syndrome.
Physical Dependence
It is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability, and slowed movements.
Parkinson’s Disease
These are drugs that block receptors for acetylcholine.
Anticholinergic Agents
This type of drug goes through conversion to Dopamine in the brain in order to activate Dopamine receptors.
Levodopa
This is another type of a drug for dopamine replacement which permits more levodopa to be transported and blocks the destruction of levodopa in the periphery.
Carbidopa
What is COMT inhibitors?
Catechol-O-methyltransferase
Can COMT Inhibitors and Carbidopa work without Levodopa? Yes or No.
No
It’s an anti-viral drug that’s also used to treat measles and HIV in some cases. It also promotes the release of dopamine which is a result of its side effect.
Amantadine
To prevent Tyramine Reaction to happen, we have to provide health teaching to our clients. Therefore, Tyramine rich foods should not be given along with what medications?
Levodopa and MAO-A Inhibitors
When you use Amantadine with dopaminergic drugs it will cause what type of adverse effects?
Anticholinergic
What are the dopaminergic drugs that causes orthostatic hypotension?
Amantadine, Bromocriptine, Ropinirole
