Central Nervous System drugs Flashcards
A drug that is used for psychiatric disorders, suppression of seizures, relief of pain, and production of anesthesia.
Central Nervous System Drugs
A dysregulation of the transmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Indicates hyperactivity, inability to concentrate, and inatentiveness.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
A drug that is given to increase child’s attention span and cognitive performance.
Methylphenidate
A drug that is used for treatment of respiratory depression caused by drug overdosed and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Doxapram
A disease that is slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instablity and slowed movement.
It affects the extrapyramidal system which influences movement.
Parkinson’s Disease
A group of disorders characterized by excessive excitability of neurons in the CNS.
Epilepsy
A type of seizure in which excitation undegoes limited spread from the focus to adjacent cortical areas.
Partial Seizures
A type of seizure in which excitation spreads widely throughout both hemispheres of the brain.
General Seizures
What traditional antiepileptic medication works on all type of seizures?
Valproic Acid (Depakote)
What are the 4 anti-epileptic drugs mechanism?
1. Suppression of Sodium
2. Suppression of Calcium Influx
3. Antagonism of Gluatamate
4. Potetiation of GABA
A drug that is most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drug. Also, stabilize nerve cells to keep them from getting overexcited by increasing influx of sodium ions.
Phenytion
A drug that is most commonly prescribed anticonvulsant drug. Also, stabilize nerve cells to keep them from getting overexcited by increasing influx of sodium ions.
Phenytion
How many mcg/mL of Phenytion is needed in monitoring blood levels?
10 - 20 mcg/mL
A drug that is under Barbiturates which is effective against partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures but not absence of seizures.
It can be also used as daytime sedative “sleeping pills”
Phenobarbital
A drug that is under Iminostilbenes which suppresses neuronal discharge by delaying recovery of sodium channels and has fewer side effects than phenytion and phenobarbital.
Carbamazipine
