central nervous system Flashcards
grey matter of the CNS contains: (2)
- neuron cell bodies
- dendrites
white matter contains: (1)
- axon tracts
white matter is located
deeper within the brain, underlying the cortex
what are the three layers of the spinal cord and brain (innermost to outermost)
Pia mater -> arachnoid mater -> dura mater -> spinal cord or skull
(PADS)
what is the outer cavity of the brain called?
superior sagittal sinus (SSS)
What is the inner cavity of the brain called?
Subarachnoid space (SAS)
what is the purpose of the cerebrospinal fluid in the cavities of the brain and spinal cord?
protection
Where does the spinal cord span from?
brain stem -> pelvic region
lower motor damage reflex will be _____ with damage
diminished
upper motor neuron damage will be _____ with damage
exaggerated
what is the function of the parietal lobe?
- perception of somatesthetic sensation (cutaneous, muscle, tendon and joint receptors)
What is the function of the temporal lobe?
interpretation and association of auditory and visual information
what is the function of the occipital lobe?
vision and co-ordination of eye movements
what is the function of the frontal lobe?
motor control
Where is the insula?
between the frontal and temporal lobes
what is the function of the insula?
- encoding memory
- integration of sensory information
- receives olfactory, gustatory, auditory and somatosensory (pain) information
How do the two hemispheres of the brain communicate with eachother?
via the corpus callosum
what happens if there is damage to the right side of the brain?
difficulty with spatial concepts, ie: maps
What happens if there is damage to the left side of the brain?
speech problems
What is the cerebral cortex?
sheet of grey matter tissue that covers the cerebrum and cerebellum
what is the cerebral cortex important for?
emotion and memory
what is the function of the thalamus?
- relay centre for sensory info (excluding smell)
- promotes alertness
- causes arousal from sleep in response to strong sensory stimulas
what is the function of the epithalamus?
pineal gland secretes melatonin (regulate circadian rhythms)
what is the function of the hypothalamus
- hunger, thirst, regulation of body temp.
- hormone secretion from the pituitary gland
- regulation of sleep and wake
what are the two systems of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain?
- nigrostriatal
- mesolimbic
what is the function of the nigrostriatal dopamine system?
motor control
what is the function of the mesolimbic dopamine system
emotional reward
what is the function of the cerebellum?
- monitoring and refining of motor activity initiated elsewhere
- coordination of movement
what is the function of the medulla?
- ascending and descending fiber tracts providing communication between spinal cord and brain passes through the medulla
- required for regulation of breathing, CV responses
How many spinal nerves are there?
31
what creates the cerebrospinal fluid?
choroid plexus
what are the four lobes of the brain
- parietal
- temporal
- occipital
- frontal
what does the amygdala do?
strengthening of emotional memories
which two parts of the brain are receptors for stress hormones?
- hippocampus
- amygdala
