Central Nervous System Flashcards
What is Axonal conduction?
Conducting an action potential down the axon of the neuron.
It is the process by which one neuron communicates with another. Information is passed down the axon of the neuron as an electrical impulse known as action potential
Synaptic transmission
What does the Blood brain barrier do?
It shields the brain from toxic substances in the blood, supplies brain tissues with nutrients, and filters harmful compounds from the brain back to the bloodstream.
Characteristics of ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder)
Inattentiveness, Inability to concentrate, Restlessness, Hyperactive, Inability to complete task and Impulsivity.
A disorder that you’re unable to move or collapse
Narcolepsy
What is the use of Amphetamines?
Stimulate the release of norepinephrine and dopamine from the brain and sympathetic nervous system.
It is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination.
Parkinson’s Disease
What is Epilepsy?
It is a group of disorders characterized by excessive excitability of neurons in the cranial nervous system.
What is Partial Seizure?
Happens when unusual electrical activity affects a small area of the brain.
What is Generalized seizure?
Occurs when the abnormal electrical activity causing a seizure begins in both halves (hemispheres) of the brain at the same time.
What are the Anti – Epileptic Drugs Mechanism?
Suppression of sodium, Suppression of Calcium Influx, Antagonism of Glutamate, Potentiation of GABA (Gamma – Aminobutyric Acid)
What are the medicine for Partial Focal Seizures?
Carbamazepine, Gabapentin, Lamotrigine, Tiagabine, Topiramate
It is a medicine that bind to a carrier protein and act at a receptor resulting in increased GABA in the brain.
Gabapentin
What are the Uses of Non-Depolarizing Agents?
Ease of passage of an endotracheal tube
Decrease the amount of anesthetic required during surgery
Facilitate realigning bones and dislocated joints, Prevent muscle injury during electroconvulsive therapy
What is Opioid Addiction?
Characteristic withdrawal syndrome occurs within 1 hour to several days after cessation of substance use.
