Central Nervous System Flashcards
What makes up the Central Nervous System?
Brain and Spinal Cord
It is the central control of the Central Nervous System. What protects it?
Brain. Skull protects the brain.
It is the main pathway of information that connects the brain and the Peripheral Nervous System. What protects it?
Spinal cord. Vertebral column protects the spinal cord. There are a total of 24 vertebrae.
Telencephalon or is also known as Cerebrum is the largest section of the brain. It is divided into 2 hemisphere: right and left hemisphere. It is also divided into 4 lobes. Enumerate the 4 Lobes and its function.
a. Frontal – Reasoning and thoughts. Site of motor cortex.
b. Parietal – Integrates sensory information. Somatosensory cortex.
c. Temporal – Processing auditory information from the ears. Auditory cortex.
d. Occipital – Processing visual information from the eyes. Visual cortex.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (Cerebellum) is located below the
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and above the 1st cervical of the neck. Identify its function/ responsibility.
Metencephalon, cerebrum.
It is responsible for muscle coordination, balance, posture and tone.
Diencephalon (_ _ _ _ _ brain). Contains the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .
Twixt. Thalamus, Hypothalamus.
Differentiate the function of Thalamus and Hypothalamus.
Thalamus directs sensory impulses to the cerebrum. While Hypothalamus controls and regulate the temperature, appetite, water balance, sleep, and blood vessel constriction and dilation.
Arrange the Brain Stem to proper order.
A. Pons
B. Myelencephalon Medulla Oblongata
C. Mesencephalon (Mid Brain)
C.
A.
B.
A Brain Stem that is responsible for the auditory reflexes. Where can you find this brain stem?
Mesencephalon (Mid Brain). It is located below the cerebrum.
It is a brain stem that is responsible for certain reflexes actions (chewing, tasting and saliva production). Where can you find this brain stem?
Pons. It is Located below the mid brain.
This brain Stem connects to the spinal cord. It regulates heart & blood vessel function, digestion, respiration, swallowing, coughing, sneezing and blood pressure. Where can we find this brain stem? It is known as the
“_ _ _ _ _ _ of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _”.
Myelencephalon (Medulla Oblongata). It is Located at the bottom of the brainstem.
“Center of Respiration”.
What is Afferent?
Carries information and signal from the body to the brain.
What is Efferent?
Carries information and signal from the brain to the body.
Enumerate the 5 parts of Spinal Cord.
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
- Sacrum
- Coccygeal
It is a nerve that transmit the sense of smell.
Olfactory Nerve.
It is a nerve that transmits visual info to the brain.
Optic Nerve.
Based on the Mnemonics below, enumerate the 12 cranial nerve.
