masquerade; e.g He was tired of the masquerade and wanted the truth to come out.
to protect something/somebody from loss, harm or damage; to keep something/somebody safe
safeguard; e.g to safeguard a person’s interests

done without any good reason or purpose and often having harmful effects
gratuitous; e.g It was a completely gratuitous insult which the singer’s agent was forced to apologize for.
