Cements + Adhesives Flashcards
Intermediary Material
material that occupies the space between tooth and restoration
Indirect vs Direct Restorations
Indirect = crowns, inlays/onlays; Direct = amalgams, composites
Luting
[primary/type 1] thin, loosely mixed cement to attach an indirect restoration. mechanical bond.
Base
[secondary/type 2] thick. chemical + mechanical bond
Temporary Restoration
cement mixed thick for emergency or temporary measure
Cement Liner
thin, seals dentin, seals out bacteria, protects pulp, stimulates dentin formation
(Calcium Hydroxide [Dycal])
Cement Base
thick, may irritate pulp, supports restorative material , thermal/electric protection (amalgam only)
Pulp Caps
Indirect = suspected pulp exposure, cement not in contact w pulp ; Direct = exposure, cement on pulp
Adhesive
[bonding to dentin/enamel] retention of restorations, reduce microleakage, reduce sensitivity/staining/recurrent decay. may cause initial sensitivity
Powders
[base] Zinc Oxide / Powdered Glass
Liquids
[acid] Eugenol / Phosphoric Acid / Polyacrylic Acid
Activation Methods
Chemically
Light (longer working times)
Dual Core
Calcium Hydroxide
[Dycal] soluble, mechanical bond, low strength base.
barrier for pulp: *stimulates odontoblasts (reparative dentin)
Zinc Phosphate
[ZOP, Flecks] low solubility, mechanical bond, strong high comp strength, insulating base.
- irritating to pulp, needs liner.
- cool glass slab to slow exothermic reaction.
Zinc Polycarboxylate
[Durelon] moderate solubility, chemical bond, low strength, neutral pH. - no microleakage.
shiny, loss of gloss means its setting.
used w fixed prosthodontics.
