Amalgam Flashcards
Dental Amalgam: components
alloy (2 or more powdered metals {silver, tin, zinc, copper}) + liquid mercury
Overtrituration vs Undertrituration
over = crumbly, difficult to condense under = mushy, grainy
Thermal Conductivity
rate which heat flows through material
Amalgam - transmits heat quickly, need cement base [ZOP best]
Amalgam Strength
good compressive strength, good abrasion resistance, low tensile (thin areas don’t tolerate force)
Isthmus Fracture
fracture across thinnest part of restoration
Amalgam Quality
Manufacturer - composition, size/shape of alloy
Dental Team - trituration, condensation, finishing
Amalgam Advantages + Disadvantages
A - good marginal seal, compressive strength, easy to manipulate, cheap, long lasting.
D - not tooth colored, tarnish, ditching
Recontouring
reduces bulky material to blend w tooth
Finishing
contour to remove excess material and produce smooth surface
Margination
well adapted junction between enamel and restoration
Overextention/Flash
catches from tooth to restoration
Submarginal
catches from restoration to tooth
Open margin / Ditching
catches both ways
