CELS 191 Lecture 1 Flashcards
what are the characteristics of life
cellular organisation
reproduction
metabolism
homeostasis
hereditary
response to stimuli
growth and development
adaptation through evolution
what is the definition of evolution
when you have organisms that vary, pass on their characteristic and survive differently, you get evolution
what does natural selection rely on
differential reproduction which is when some individuals in a population are more successful in their reproduction than others
what are the requirements for natural selection
variation - individuals in a population vary from one another
inheritance - parents pass on their traits to their offspring genetically
selection - some variants reproduce more than others
time - successful variations accumulate over many generations
what is phylogenetic tree
a family tree made by identifying shared characters. characters can be physically things or sequence information from biological molecules.
what are the three domains of life
bacteria, eukarya and archaea
what is the endosymbiosis theory
the theory that two key mitochondria and chloroplasts are derived from bacteria
what organism where chloroplasts derived from according to the endosymbiont theory
cyano bacteria
what organism where mitochondria derived form according to the endosymbiont theory
proteobacteria
what is the difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes
eukaryotic cells contain a membrane bound nucleus and other organelles.
