Clinical Features of Cellulitis

A

Calor, dolor, rubor, turgor

May be blistering of overlying skin, occasionally skin necrosis (gangrene)

Associated features - lymphangitis (tracking)

Systemic features - severe cellulitis, pyrexia, malaise and rigors

A

Streptococcus pyogenes

Staphylococcus aureus

Treatment of cellulitis

A

IV benzyl penicillin - group A (beta haemolytic) streptococci (eg strep pyogenes)

Flucloxacillin - Staph aureus

Metronidazole added if ischaemic tissue or diabetic
