Cellular Ultrastructure Flashcards
Centriole
Used for animal cells to reproduce. release long, stiff fibres called microtubules that split the cell apart during cell division.
Nucleus
Controls and regulates activities of the cell. (e.g growth and metabolism)
Nucleolus
Participates in assembling the ribosomes, alteration of transfer RNA and sensing cellular stress.
Nuclear membrane
Separates the contents of the nucleus from the rest of the cell
Lysosome
Contains digestive enzymes. Break down excess or worn-out cell parts. May be used to destroy invading bacteria
Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum
synthesis of lipids, steroids and carbs. Also metabolism of exogenous substances like drugs.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Produce proteins for the rest of the cell to function
Golgi Apparatus
Packages proteins into membrane-bound vesicles inside the cell before the vesicles are sent to their destination
Ribosomes
particles within the cytoplasm, consisting of RNA and protein. Is the site of protein synthesis
Cytoplasm
Holds the organelles in place and protects them from damage. Stores molecules used for cellular processes, and hosts many of these processes within the cell itself.
Cell membrane
separates the interior of cells from the outside environment, which protects the cell from its environment.
Mitochondria
Generate energy
Cytoskeleton
Inner structural elements of a cell. provides both structural support and a means of transport
