Cellular Technologies Flashcards
Characteristics:
. A communication network where the last link is wireless
. Distributed over land areas called ‘cells’
. Cells provide radio coverage over a wide geographic area
. Allows transceivers to communicate with each other, and with fixed transceivers and telephones anywhere in the network via base stations
. Desirable features :
- more capacity than a single transmitter
- mobile devices use less power than with a single transmitter or satellite
Larger coverage area than a single terrestrial transmitter
Cellular concept:
. Land area divided into cells
. These areas take the form of regular shapes such as hexagonal cells, these are conventional
. Each cell is assigned multiple frequencies, with corresponding radio base stations
. A group of frequencies can be reused in other cells
. Mobile communication switching system allows multiple callers in a given area to use the same frequency
Cellular architecture:
. Mobile equipment
- user devices
. Base station subsystems
- base station controller
- base transceiver station
. Mobile switching centre
- multiple base controllers
- call routing
- call setup
- basic switching function
- interfacing with other MSCs
- inter-BSC handoffs
- coordination with other MSCs for inter-MSC handoffs
5G frequency:
Frequency range 1: 450MHz - 6GHz
Frequency range 2: 24.25GHz - 52.6GHz
