Cellular respiration revision (2.4) Flashcards
1
Q
Define aerobic respiration + why it occurs.
A
- Aerobic respiration is the conversion of biochemical energy from nutrients into useable energy (ATP).
- This ATP is needed for metabolism, growth, movement, etc.
2
Q
What is the chemical equation for aerobic respiration?
A
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —-> 6CO2 + 6H2O +38ATP
3
Q
Define fermentation
A
Fermentation is the anaerobic process by which pyruvic acid is reduced to substances such as lactic acid (in animals) or ethanol (in plants) and a little ATP.
