Cellular Respiration Flashcards
The breakdown of glucose Is used to do what?
Synthesize ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate (Pi)
Gibbs free energy 🔺G
- Energy transformation is not 100% Efficient
- Gibbs free energy is the energy available to do the work
- energy released during a reaction with 🔺G can be used to do work in other reaction that require energy
-🔺G
Products that have less energy than reactants -> exergonic reaction (cell respiration)
+🔺G
Products have more free energy than the reactants
-> endergonic reaction (photosynthesis)
Cristae
-Folds in the mitochondria
Increases SA for reactions
Equation of cellular respiration
6O(2) + C(6)H(12)O(6) –> 6CO(2) + 6H(2)O + 36ATP
Chemoautotrophs
Build organic molecules from inorganic materials
Ex. Thermophiles use iron and magnesium
Oxidization
Losing electrons
Reduction
Gains electrons
Aerobic cell respiration
- Occurs in presence of oxygen
- involves 20 reactions
- results in decrease in free energy and is classified as exergonic (🔺G = -2870kj/mol of glucose)
- a large amount of activation energy would be required, but combustion of glucose in cellular respiration uses several reactions with a small activation energy
Anaerobic pathways ?
Two process oxidize food molecules in absence of oxygen.
- Anaerobic respiration
- Fermentation
Release small amounts of free energy compared to aerobic respiration
Obligate anaerobe
Must live in oxygen free environments to survive
Ex. Gangrene
Facultative anaerobe
Can live in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions
Ex. Salmonella causes food poisoning
