Cellular respiration Flashcards
What is cellular respiration?
The process in which energy is released from molecules of food you eat.
Where does respiration take place?
The mitochondria
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Oxygen+Glucose>Carbon dioxide+Water
How are oxygen and glucose transported to the mitochondria
Oxygen=binded with heamoglobin in the red blood cells
Glucose=Transported to cells in blood plasma
What is the chemical equation for anaerobic respiration
Glucose = lactic acid
When is anaerobic respiration used
When the body does not have sufficient oxygen
What are the disadvantages of anaerobic respiration
IT releases less energy and lactic acid can build up to cause cramps and muscle fatigue.
What is oxygen debt
How much oxygen is needed to break down lactic acid from anaerobic respiration
What is fermentation
A type of anaerobic respiration that occurs in yeast
What is the equation for fermentation
Glucose>ethanol+carbon dioxide
