cellular injury Flashcards
acute ischemia results in :
injusry
slowly developing ischemia results in :
atrophy
what are common causes of cellular injury?
inflammation, nutritional deficiency or excess, hypoxia, trauma, and genetic mutations
what is hypoxia?
low osygen delivery to tissue
what is ischemia?
restriction in blood supply to tissues, causing a shortage of oxygen and glucose needed for cellular metabolism
who is the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain of oxidative phosphorylation?
oxygen
what are some causes of hypoxia?
ischemia, hypoxemia, and decreased O2 carrying capacity of blood
ischemia arises with:
decreased arterial perfusion, decreased venous drainage, shock - generalized hypotension resulting in poor tissue perfusion
what is hypoxemia?
low partial pressure of oxygen in the blood (PaO2 < 90%)
hypoxemia arises with:
high altitude, hypoventilation, diffusion defect, V/Q mismatch
