CELLULAR ENERGETICS Flashcards
1
Q
Adenosine Triphosphate
A
- it is a molecule of adenosine bonded to three phosphates
- it has an enormous amount of energy packed into those phosphate bonds, especially the third bond
2
Q
Sources of ATP
A
- Through photosynthesis
- through cellular respiration
3
Q
Photosynthesis
A
- transformation of solar/light energy into chemical energy
- plants use their leaves to capture sunlight and make glucose
- 6CO2 + 6H2O —> C6H12 + 6O2
4
Q
Where photosynthesis occurs
A
Chloroplast
- the primary sites for photosynthesis
Stroma
- Fluid-filled structures
Grana
- inside the stroma that look like stack of coins
Thylakoids
- What makes up the grana and are like disk-like structures
5
Q
Two stages of photosynthesis
A
- the light reaction (the light-dependent reaction)
- the dark reaction (the light-independent reaction)
6
Q
What is the purpose of the light reaction and what does it produce?
A
It produces two things:
1) energy in the form of ATP and
2) electron carriers, specifically NADPH
7
Q
What are the products of the light reaction then use for?
A
- the products of the light reaction, alongside with carbon dioxide will be used in the process of the dark reaction in order to make carbohydrates
8
Q
Cellular Respiration
A
- process of breaking down glucose and making ATP
- C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O +ATP
9
Q
Types of Cellular Respiration
A
Aerobic respiration
- If ATP is made with the presence of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration
- If the oxygen is not present
