Cells Unit Flashcards
the smallest unit that can perform all life classes of life; cells are covered by a membrane and DNA and cytoplasm
Cell
in a eukaryotic cell, a membrane-bound organelle that contains the cell’s DNA and that has a role in processes such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
Nucleus
the material or protoplasm within a living cell, excluding the nucleus.
Cytoplasm
a phospholipid layer that covers a cells surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of the cell and the cells enviroment
Cell membrane
a rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria. In the algae and higher plants, it consists mainly of cellulose.
Cell Wall
an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur. It has a double membrane, the inner layer being folded inward to form layers.
Mitochondria
the food producers of the cell. The organelles are only found in plant cells and some protists such as algae. Animal cells do not have it.
Chloroplast
is found in most cells. It is another packaging organelle like the endoplasmic reticulum.
Golgi complex
a network of membranous tubules within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell, continuous with the nuclear membrane. It usually has ribosomes attached and is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.
Endoplasmic reticulum
a complex of over 50 proteins plus its own complement of RNA, often denoted rRNA.
Ribosome
an organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.
Lysosome
are storage bubbles found in cells. They are found in both animal and plant cells but are much larger in plant cells.
