cell

epithelial tissue
nervous tissue

name the four types of bones in the body
long bones
short bones
flat bones
irregular bones
List the 5 main functions of the skeleton
Support movement protection of vital organs, the brain and the spinal cord production of blood cells storage of minerals
name 3 kinds of joints and an example of each
all bone movement occurs at the joints -
Fibrous Joints - skull
(fixed)
- Bones held together by fibrous connective tissue incl. many collagen fibres. No synovial cavity/fluid.
Cartilaginous Joints - vertabrae
(slightly moveable)
- Bones held together by cartilage. No synovial cavity/fluid.
Synovial Joints - hip
(incl. freely moveable)
- Joint includes a synovial cavity containing fluid secreted by the synovial membrane. Bones forming the joint surrounded by an articular capsule.
bone forming cells that convert cartilage to bone are called
osteblasts
the spinal column consists of irregular bones called:
vertebrae
The spine is the place in the human body where the most irregular bones can be found. There are, in all, 33 irregular bones found here.
The Skeleton is divided into 2 divisions:
Axial Skeleton and the Appendicular Skeleton
The second part of the vertebral column - made up of 12 vertabrae
Thoracic Region
The region of the spine that contains the largest, strongest vertabrae
Lumbar Spine - 5 vertabrae
The first 7 vertabrae make up this region
Cervical Region
This is commonly called the tailbone
Coccyx
Five bones fuse together to form this single bone
Sacrum - fusion of 5 sacial vertabrae
