Cells, Tissues, Organs & Systems Flashcards
Unicellular Organisms
- Uni = One
* Organisms made up of only one cell
Multicellular Organisms
- Multi = More than one
* Organism with more than one cell
Specialised Animal Cells
- Muscle cells
- Nerve cells
- Blood cells
- Fat cell
Muscle Cells
- Contain large number of mitochondria as lots of energy is needed in these cells
- Go from being shorter and fatter (contracted) to longer and skinnier to move body
The Main Types of Muscles
Voluntary Muscles
β’ Deliberate use and movement
Involuntary Muscles
β’ You donβt even have to think about these
Cardiac Muscles
β’ Muscles in your heart
Nerve Cells
- Make up your brain
- Some carry messages from brain to parts of your body
- Some carry messages from parts of your body to your brain
Blood Cells: Red Blood Cells
β’ Carry oxygen round your body (and carry some carbon dioxide out)
Blood Cells: White Blood Cells
β’ Infection fighters (your immune system)
Fat Cells
β’ Store energy
β’ Help our body stay warm
Two different types:
β’ Brown fat cells - produce heat
β’ White fat cells - store energy
Tissues
- Tissues are groups of the same type of cell which perform a specific function
- Epithelium: skin
β’ Connective tissue: tissue that connects things
β’ Muscle tissue: groups of muscle cells
β’ Nerve tissue: groups of nerve cells
Organs
β’ Organs are made up of different types of tissue which work together
β’ Have a special job
Systems
- A system is a group of organs which work together to fulfil a major role in the body
β’ Digestive system
β’ Circulatory system - Respiratory system
- Excretory system
