Cells Flashcards
Nucleus
- The control centre of the cell
* Controls reactions, development and reproduction in cells
Cell Membrane
- The ‘skin’ that holds the cell together
* Think of it kind of like the outside of a water balloon
Cytoplasm
• A ‘jelly’ substance that holds all the different parts of the inside of a cell
Vacuoles
- Store waste and other chemicals used by the cell
- ‘The storage cupboard of a cell’
- BTW: Animal cells can have more than one of these and plant cells have a HUGE one
Organelles: Mitochondria
• Power stations of a cell - release energy from food
Organelles: Ribosomes
• Protein factories - produce protein for growth and repair
Organelles: Lysosomes
• Rubbish trucks - remove waste products from the cell
Organelles: Endoplasmic Reticulum
• Cell highways - Pathways that allow materials to move around the cell
Unique Features of Plant Cells: Cell Wall
• Provides shape and support for the plant - they don’t have skeletal systems remember!
Unique Features of Plant Cells: Chloroplasts
• The photosynthesis machine of a plant. This is the part of a plant that contains chlorophyll and creates a plant’s energy from sunlight
