Q

Nutrition

A

Nutrition is the supply of nutrients required by an organism. Nutrition provides the organism with glucose required for cellular respiration.

Q

Double Circulatory System

A

the double circulatory system is a system in which blood circulates through the heart twice.

Deoxygenated blood goes through the heart, to the lungs, gets oxygenated, and then returns to the heart.

Oxygenated blood is pumped throughout the body and then returns to the heart deoxygenated, and the cycle continues.

A double circulatory system is important in humans as it ensures that throughout our body, cells are receiving oxygenated blood. This is important because one part of cellular respiration requires oxygen.

An advantage that comes with having a double circulatory system is that the blood pressure is higher, so a greater flow of blood reaches organs and tissues.

Q

How does alveoli make gas exchange efficent?

A

Deoxygenated blood enters the capillary that sounds an alveolus. Carbon dioxide is diffused from the red blood cells into the alveolus, and oxygen is diffused from the alveolus to the red blood cells. The blood is now oxygenated and exits the capillary.

A way alveoli makes gas exchange efficient is that they increase the surface area of the lungs, and have very thin, moist walls.

By increasing the surface area of the lungs, more blood is able to be oxygenated, returned to the heart, and pumped to the rest of the body quickly.

Because the walls are so thin, oxygen can be diffused into the blood stream. As well as this, carbon dioxide can be diffused out. This means oxygen can be obtained and carbon dioxide removed from the bloodstream rapidly and effectively.

Both these ways help the respiratory system to function better because they are efficiently providing cells with oxygen, one of the two components required for respiration.

Q

Respiration

A

Respiration is the act of breathing in air, which the body obtains oxygen from. Respiration provides an organism with oxygen required for cellular respiration.
