Cells - structure Flashcards
What are cells?
Basic units from which all living organisms are composed.
What is the surface of the animal cell called?
Cell membrane.
What are the 2 functions of the cell membrane?
- controls what goes in and out of cell
- Holds cell together
What is the role of the cell nucleus?
Controls processes which go on in cell
What is the role of nuclear membrane?
Separates contents of the nucleus from the cytoplasm.
What becomes visible within the nucleus when the cell is about to divide?
Chromosomes
What are chromosomes made of?
DNA, Deoxyribonucleic acid
What is the role of DNA?
Carries instructions for characteristics and functions of the cell
What takes place in the ‘cytoplasm’?
chemical reactions
What is the food store within the cytoplasm call?
Glycogen granules
Where does cell respiration take place?
Mitochondria
A plant cell has all the structures that an animal cell has. What are the 3 additional structures?
Vacuole, cell wall, chloroplast
What is the cell wall of a plant cell made of?
Cellulose
Cell wall is a stiff structure. What is it’s role?
Provides support, prevents them from bursting when they take in water.
What is the vacuole filled with?
Cell sap
