Q
who discovered the cell?
A
robert hooke
2
Q
what did robert hooke do?
A
- he invented the word “cell”
- late 1665
- he looked at thin slices of cork (plant cells) under the microscope

A
- cork cells appeared to be made of thousands of tiny, empty chambers
- hooke called these chambers “cells,” as they reminded him of the tiny rooms in which he lived in in the monastery
- today, we know that cells are not EMPTY chambers, but instead contain much living matter*

Q
anton van leeuwenhoek

- made microscopes that had 10x magnification than the microscopes used by hooke
- late 1660s
- discovered microorganisms in a drop of water (called them “little beasties”)
- first to: see and describe microorganisms under the microscope

- all animals were composed of cells
- 1839
