- he invented the word “cell”

- he looked at thin slices of cork (plant cells) under the microscope

- hooke called these chambers “cells,” as they reminded him of the tiny rooms in which he lived in in the monastery
- today, we know that cells are not EMPTY chambers, but instead contain much living matter*
