Cells of the Nervous System Flashcards
Neuron
The basic unit of the nervous system; transmits electrical signals.
Dendrites
Receives information from other neurons.
Axon
Single long cell process extending from the neuron cell body.
Axon Hillock
The area where the axon leaves the neuron cell body.
Multipolar Neurons
Have many dendrites and a single axon.
Bipolar Neurons
Have one dendrite and one axon.
Pseudo-unipolar Neurons
Have a single axon.
Glial Cells
Also called neuroglia; support cells in the Nervous System.
Astrocytes
Major supporting cells in the CNS.
Ependymal Cells
Line the fluid-filled cavities within the CNS.
Microglia
Immune cells of the CNS.
Oligodendrocytes
Produces myelin in the CNS.
Schwann Cell
Produces myelin in the PNS.
Satellite Cells
Provides support and nutrition to the neurons.
Myelin Sheath
Insulating layer around axons that speeds up signal transmission.
