Cells of Animals Flashcards
What are Eukaryotes?
Eukaryotes are complex organism made entirely out of eukaryotic cells.
What is a Prokaryote
A Prokaryote is a single prokaryotic celled organism
Give a definition of the cytoplasm in an animal cell?
The cytoplasm is a jelly-like material containing dissolved nutrients, salts and structures called organelles.
What is the function of the cytoplasm in an animal cell?
The function of the cytoplasm is the home to where many of the chemical reactions take place.
Give a definition of the nucleus in an animal cell?
The nucleus contains genetic material - including DNA -which controls the cell’s activities.
Give a definition of the cell membrane in an animal cell?
The cell membrane, also called the plasma membrane, is found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment.
What is the function of the cell membrane in an animal cell?
Its structure is permeable to some substances but not to others; therefore controlling the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
Give a definition of the mitochondria in animal cell?
Organelles that contain the enzymes for respiration, and where most energy is released in respiration.
What are ribosomes in an animal cell?
Tiny structures where protein synthesis occurs.
What is the main function of a cell
Cells provide structure for the body, take in nutrients from food, convert those nutrients into energy, and carry out specialized functions.
Cells also contain the body’s hereditary material and can make copies of themselves.
