Biology section 1.1 - The Heart Flashcards
What do arteries and veins do?
Arteries simply carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart, and the veins carry oxygen-poor blood towards the heart.
What organs carry blood to and from the Lungs, Liver, Kidney
Towards Lungs - Pulmonary Artery
From the Lungs - Pulmonary Vein
Towards Liver - Hepatic Artery
From the Liver - Hepatic Vein
Towards Kidney - Renal Artery
From the Kidney - Renal Vein
Carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the air in the…
Alveoli
Capillaries are found…
Capillaries is where…
Capillaries have…
Capillaries are…
- In the Muscles and Lungs
- Gas Exchange happens
- Ex low blood pressure
- One cell thick (tiny)
What is the main function of the human heart?
The main function of the heart is to oxygenate and then reoxygenate the blood supply, to work to human body in it’s correct form.
Each direction of the structure of the heart has a certain amount of valve flaps. How many on each part? Why
The tricuspid valve on the right part of the heart, consist of three flaps and the bicuspid valve on the left part of the heart consist of two flaps. (1)
The valves’ function is to make sure that the blood flow doesn’t flow backwards. (2)
What is the correct terminology for the systems that carry oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood through the body?
The pulmonary circuit carries oxygen poor blood; and the systemic circuit carries oxygen rich blood through the body
The pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit is between what organs?
The pulmonary circuit is between the heart and the lungs.
The systemic circuit is between the heart and the many other organs!
During excerise bodily muscles need more energy than usual…
Because of this the heart has to respire more, and is in need of more ‘oxygen’ and ‘glucose’ to produce carbon dioxide waste - To meet this demand how does the heart help itself?
The beating of the hearts increases so the contractions become more frequent. With each pump of blood, an increased volume of blood is flowing into the body.
What can the hormone ‘adrenaline’ be capable of when afraid/excited/stressed/ feelings of anger?
The hormone ‘adrenaline’ increases our heart rate and volume of blood being contracted, preparing us for ‘fight or flight’
A heart attack? Why? How?
A heart attack becomes likely if a person is eating a poor diet - consisting of high amounts of saturated fats - and/or is under or experiencing stress and smoking.
A heart attack happens when layers of fatty plaque, containing cholesterol, block the path of the blood flow in the arteries of the heart.
What does the Superior Vena Cava do?
The main function of the Vena Cava is to carry blood from the senior parts of the body - arms, chest, neck and head.
What does the Aorta do?
The aorta is the main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body.
The blood leaves the heart through the aortic valve, travelling through the aorta that freely allows other major arteries to deliver oxygen-rich blood to the brain, muscles and other cell
What does each atrium do?
The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs. The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood returning from other parts of the body. Valves connect the atria to the ventricles, the lower chambers.
Each atrium empties into the corresponding ventricle below.
The blood that the heart contracts is filled with two antbodies. What are they and what do they do?
Red blood cells - reoxygenated blood cells that deliver oxygen
White blood cells - prevent/fight illness or infection
