Cells, Genetics & Tissues Quiz1 Flashcards
Define the term Homeostasis.
The condition of equilibrium in the bodies internal environment maintained by the bodies own regulatory process.
Briefly explain how a negative feedback system works.
A negative feedback system is when the output reverses the input. For example-the body temperature becoming too high stimulates the negative feedback system to reduce the bodies temperature until equilibrium is returned.
The negative feedback system is also used for hormones and blood pressure.
Describe the structure of the cell membrane.
The cell membrane is a Phospholipid bilayer.
It also has transmembrane proteins embedded, as well as other fats like cholesterol.
Describe TWO functions of the cell membrane.
The membrane is there to allow substances in and out of the cell.
It’s also there for immune identity.
And it’s there to act as a receptor for hormones.
What is meant by the term Hydrophilic?
Hydrophilic means water loving (Hydrophobic is the opposite )
How many chromosomes does a human ‘somatic cell’ have?
46
( or 23 pairs)
Describe the main function of ribosomes.
Ribosomes are structures that manufacture proteins. They are involved in protein synthesis.
Name the cell organelle involved in energy (ATP) production.
Mitochondria
Name the cell organelle that modifies, sorts & packages proteins.
The Golgi Apparatus
(The cell Post Office)
State ONE function of lysosomes.
Lysosomes are involved in the digestion of cell organelles; the
digestion of foreign cells; and the
sperm penetrating through the egg.
