Cells, Genetics & Tissues Quiz 2 Flashcards
Briefly describe what the process mitosis produces.
Mitosis produces TWO identical somatic cells.
(And is involved in growth and repair)
Meiosis is a process that produces what type of cells?
Gamete cells,
also known as sex cells
Define the term ‘mutation’.
A mutation is a change in the genetic sequence /genetic code.
State TWO major differences between passive and active transport.
Passive transport goes from an area of high to low concentration
And needs no energy (ATP)
Whereas
Active transport goes from low to high concentration
And does need energy (ATP)
What is moving during Osmosis?
Water
Name the type of gland that secretes its products into ducts.
Exocrine gland
Name TWO protein fibres found in connective tissues.
1.Collagen Fibres
2. Elastic Fibres
Name THREE body systems where mucous membranes exist.
Digestive system
Respiratory system
Genitourinary system
Name the serous membranes.
The Pleura surrounds the lungs.
The Pericardium surrounds the heart.
The Peritoneum surrounds the abdominal organs.
(Serous Membranes line body cavities that do not open to the exterior. They are double layered containing an inner visceral layer that surrounds the organs and the outer paretal layer with serous fluid inbetween allowing the organ to glide freely)
Explain the role of Goblet Cells.
Goblet Cells produce and secrete mucus, and are contained in the epithelial layer. Mucous protects the lining membrane and traps foreign particles in the respiratory tract.
