Cells, DNA Flashcards
What is Cell Theory?
All living organisms are made up of cells. Cells are the basic structural and organizational units of all organisms.
Where do all cells come from?
All cells come from pre-existing cells.
What are nucleic acids?
Biopolymers composed of nucleotide chains.
What is the structure of DNA?
Double Helix - nucleotides; deoxyribose sugar, base pairs (A, T, C, G).
What is the function of DNA?
Stores genetic information, works as a template in protein synthesis, replication during cell division.
What is the structure of RNA?
Single Stranded - nucleotides, base pairs (ribose) sugar, (A, U, C, G).
What is the function of RNA?
Protein synthesis (mRNA, tRNA), gene regulation.
What is the function of nucleotides?
Building blocks of DNA and RNA.
Where are genes found?
In the nucleus.
What are autosomal cells?
Body cells.
What is meiosis?
The process that produces gametes.
What are autosomal chromosomes?
Chromosomes that are not sex chromosomes.
What are somatic cells?
Body cells excluding gametes.
